10/19/2003 Archives: "Transformations in Brother Bear"

According to first reviews, 24 minutes into Brother Bear not only does the the main character go through a transformation, the film itself transforms. In Kenai's human world, colors are earthen and muted. But as he transforms and becomes part of the animal world the palette shifts to rich, saturated colors. But what might be more surprising to unsuspecting movie goers is the shift in aspect ratio. The film begins in standard Academy Flat 1.85:1 format. As Kenai transforms into a bear the ratio moves to Cinemascope 2.35:1 format.
