Re: Man of Steel, Justice League and DC MOVIES
Interesting for Vernadyn to point out the music because this is the first time I can say that I felt a score by Hans Zimmer was essentially an after-thought. 12 Years a Slave and Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides immediately come to mind regarding Zimmer after-thought scores. But even Zim...

Re: Man of Steel, Justice League and DC MOVIES
OK, my rambling thoughts…. I went in to BvS with rock-bottom expectations, and it ended up exceeding them...somewhat. I was expecting a 2 (out of 10) and it ended up being about a 3. Affleck wasn't bad, though he, like many of the characters, wasn't given much material to work with. I loved the scen...

Re: Iron Giant
Well, if the Amazon specs are to be believed, the Ultimate Edition "Art of" book is an even brisker 32 pages…. Still, it's quite a stellar package.

Re: Man of Steel, Justice League and DC MOVIES
It's Superman and Batman, so I'm sure it's going to do very well at the box office, at least early on. I mean, I wasn't a fan of Man of Steel, but I'm also not kidding myself--I'm going to end up watching this in theaters. (Just like I know I'll be seeing X-Men: Apocalypse, even though I can't muste...

Re: Zootopia
But...what did you think of Anomalisa...!? ;) Me? I haven't seen that yet either. (And I call myself an animation fan.) I do really like three out of the four Charlie Kaufman-written films I have seen--Being John Malkovich, Adaptation, and Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind. Synecdoche, New York...

Re: Zootopia
For example, according my my spreadsheet other movies I scored the same as Zootopia include The Princess and the Frog, The Peanuts Movie, and The Croods. I think that's a good fit for my opinion of it. The spreadsheet thing is a good idea. I was initially a little surprised at your score, because I...

Re: Zootopia
Nice notes! Completely agree that Zootopia was miles ahead of Happy Feet! I gave The good Dinosaur a 4, Zootopia a 5, and Bolt a 6 -- so right with you there too! Thanks for the compliment! I'd probably give Zootopia one more point than you did, but I really suck at giving numerical ratings. I try ...

Re: Zootopia
I agree that Zootopia isn't up to the standard of Big Hero 6, Frozen, Wreck-It Ralph, or Tangled, and that the "message" was heavy-handed, but it was a good sight better than Happy Feet. I'd say it's also better than The Good Dinosaur but in the same ballpark as Bolt--decent, but not spectacular. Th...

Re: AMC to buy Carmike
I gave away some Regal movie passes because there aren't any Regal cinemas near where I live in Silicon Valley, nor in the the area of Southern California that I frequent. Plenty of AMCs and Cinemarks, though. I guess Regal is like Wal-Mart; I know there are tons of them, but I only know of one Wal-...

Re: Zootopia
For what it's worth, Happy Feet's at 75% (which is still more than what I'd give it). I saw a TV ad that had the quote, "Disney's best in 20 years;" while I'm not going to believe that hype, I'm still hoping for a good movie, which is more than what I was hoping for a few weeks ago. (On a related no...

Re: Zootopia
All the trailers make Zootopia look like some wacky, frothy, but unsubstantial confection, so I'm pleased to see all the glowing reviews. I'm refraining from reading any of them, though, in hopes of being pleasantly surprised--as I have been with Disney Animation's last few films. I have read that G...

Re: 2016 Oscar Contest
Wow, only James got Visual Effects correct. I was about to say, "What? No one guessed Mad Max would win?" but then I remembered that Ex Machina had gotten it. And I had watched the whole ceremony too, which just goes to show how quickly I had forgotten Ex Machina's win. (No reflection on the film it...

Re: Will Disney buy DWA?
Of the major studios, Disney looks like it has the most intriguing slate. Besides the obvious exception of The Incredibles 2 (and maybe Coco), I'm not too thrilled about Pixar's upcoming films either.

Re: Will Disney buy DWA?
Sinbad does have -- by far -- my favorite of Gregson-Williams' many DW scores. Very remniscent of Pirates of the Caribbean , as Dacey says .. but with a classic 'Korngoldian' flair in its themes. Yes, this. In fact, I much prefer Sinbad's score to anything Hans and Company came up with for Pirates ...
